Iceland was uninhabited until 1870. It was discovered and settled by Norse people during the Viking age. The first recorded settler from Norway was in 874. Subsequently more than 400 settlers sailed with families, servants and slaves and staked claims to land. Most were from Norway, but some also from other Nordic countries and from the British Isles.





Islendingur is a replica of an old Viking ship called the Gokstad ship which dates from 870.
